A fundamental shift in both social and intellectual patterns created by the economic evolution of the eighteenth century led to great concern among scholars of the period. After emerging from the aftermath of intense religious upheavals brought on by the reformation movement, Europe experienced a series of revolutions that swept France, Belgium, Italy, and Poland, and threatened still others.
